Heating Public Spaces: Safe and Practical Solutions

Heating System

Heating SystemPublic and private establishments that are open to the public are responsible for providing indoor comfort and safety for their employees and visitors.

Schools, hospitals, government offices and facilities, and commercial or cultural buildings should provide efficient heating systems to protect occupants from health and safety risks when outdoor temperatures are down. Here are safe and practical solutions to take into account when heating public spaces.

Thermally Active Building Surfaces

Radiation and conduction, two of the oldest warming methods, allow a more direct transfer of heat and can make energy use independent of the building’s size. They are more energy-efficient than convection heating, which most modern heating systems apply.

But there are new technologies now that combine old, practical ways with relatively new space warming techniques. Radiant heating systems involve hot water running through a circuit of metal pipes to heat building surfaces.

Today, heating systems incorporate copper pipes and polyethylene tubes where hot water will pass to distribute heat through the ceiling, walls and floors. Contour explains that instead of heating the space, thermally active surfaces directly heat people’s bodies and, in turn, people’s bodies heat the building surfaces through radiation.

Safe and Practical Heating Solutions

There are building materials that are much better for cooling while some are for heating. Engineers choose the right surface material that has higher thermal mass so that the heating system can distribute warmth evenly throughout the space.

But some ceramic materials are not suitable for localised heating. Infrared heating panels are recent heating technologies that have little or no thermal mass and can produce heat quickly. Localised heating is more practical and ideal for public spaces because the majority of public buildings incorporate a wide variety of spaces with different uses.

The power source should also be suited to the building. Localised heating or radiant heating, which will vary on the number of people occupying the space, is a more practical and safe method compared to heating the whole room and building evenly.

Stained Smiles: Food Items and Drinks That Turn Your Teeth Yellow

Yellow TeethThe media views perfect teeth as aligned and whitened. But, if you have a stained smile, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Natural teeth do have an off-white color, though; they’re not as white as piano keys and paper.

But, some people have more yellow teeth than others, and this makes them feel self-conscious. There are extrinsic – noticeable outside, mainly caused by lifestyle choices – and intrinsic stains – seen within the tooth, caused by medication or excessive fluoride.

As aforementioned, lifestyle choices cause extrinsic stains. This includes food, drinks, and smoking. In the case of food and drinks, do you wonder which ones cause your teeth to turn yellow? Craig J. Healy, DDS shares a list of those you might want to avoid or take in moderation.

Food

Berries provide antioxidants, which are good for the body, but too many pomegranates, blackberries, and blueberries can stain your teeth. These are heavily pigmented fruits, which makes it easier for them to leave a stain.

Soy sauce can be the main ingredient in many recipes. The ones that contain soy proteins with hydrochloric acid makes it possible for it to easily discolor the teeth and even weaken them. Another one is balsamic vinegar. The acid from the vinegar can demineralize the enamel as it lowers the mouth’s pH level.

If you’re into spicy food, then you might want to go easy on the curry. Turmeric may cause serious stains on your teeth.

Drinks

If coffee is what keeps you going throughout the day, try to drink in moderation. Dark-colored drinks such as coffee are big teeth stainers; they contain tannins and acids that alter the mouth’s pH level, discoloring the teeth. Tea also contains tannins; the lower the quality of your tea, the worse the stain it’ll give your teeth.

To enjoy food and keep your teeth naturally clean and stain-free, remember to maintain proper oral hygiene. Visit your dentist regularly, so they can clean and, if necessary, whiten your teeth.

Asbestos in Your Household: Why You Should Care

Asbestos Removal in UtahAsbestos is everywhere. It is in your home, your kids’ school, and in your environment. They’re being used in constructions as a rustproofing and insulation for buildings, sound proofing material, and main chemical for general construction projects.

Asbestos, however, may create a health hazard for your family. When disturbed, it may create dust containing asbestos fibers which may cause a range of health problems when inhaled.

Read on to know its health effects:

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a result of inhaling asbestos fibers that create a scar in your lung tissue due to inflammation. As a result, it makes it hard to breathe and difficult for carbon dioxide and oxygen to pass through the lungs. This disease progresses slowly and can vary from having no symptoms to fatal results. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, persistent coughs, chest pain and tightness and loss of appetite.

Pleural disorders

Too much asbestos exposure may create thick patches on your lungs’ pleura or in some cases, a fluid in your chest cavity. These conditions are not cancerous, though. They may, however, reduce lung’s capacity to breathe, which poses more health problems when left untreated.

Lung cancer

Aside from cigarette smoking, people who tend to have too much exposure to asbestos fibers have a high risk of developing lung cancer. It may create a tumor, which spreads through your lungs if not treated right away. Most common symptoms include persistent coughing, unexplained weight loss, and labored breathing. People who experience these symptoms do not certainly have lung cancer, but should consult physicians for expert advice.

Prevention

In general, you can’t easily tell whether a material in your home contains asbestos by just looking at it. You may want to have an expert conduct an asbestos testing to make sure you’re treating it correctly. Aerolite Group explains that professionals will take samples for further analysis and identify health risks especially if asbestos fibers are already scattered in your home.

Keep these things in mind to keep your family safe. It pays to know the right information to detect asbestos.

CharityMost people think of making donations to charitable causes during the holidays. But, you can actually donate any time of the year. Helping out those in need will you make you feel good, will help these individuals, and will do your wallet a lot of good too: it will lessen the taxes you pay.

Here’s what you need to know when you want to make yourself and others feel good when making donations:

For you to receive a legitimate tax deduction, Donate A Car says you have to be sure that you make the donation to an organization qualified by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Many, but not all causes qualify for tax-deductible contributions, so you have to this to confirm this first prior to making the donation.

Non-deductible contributions include the following:

Donations addressed to specific people, candidates or political groups will not give you deductions on your tax. This applies even to charities exempt from income tax. Similarly, donations made to foreign governments and charities are non-deductible.

Limitations

There are also certain limitations to how much you can deduct from your tax when making charitable contributions. In general, you can bring down your tax up to 50% of your adjusted gross income. Donations addressed to certain fraternal and veterans’ organizations, as well as private foundations can get you up to a 30 percent deduction.

Tax-deductible items you can donate

There are plenty of items in and around your office you can donate to IRS-approved causes to receive tax deductions. When you donate a car (or other types of vehicles), furniture (especially large items such as electronics; bedroom and living room sets, as well as kitchen appliances), stocks, cash, and other miscellaneous items (ex. Clothes), you can write these off as tax deductions.

Cars and other types of vehicles, including trucks, RVs, boats, and motorcycles are some of the most generous donations to make, and so do the deductions they come with.

Mistakes to Avoid When Getting a Mortgage

Mortgage Errors to Avoid in St. GeorgeMany residents in St. George make costly yet avoidable mistakes when getting mortgages. According to experts, homebuyers who do not avoid such mistakes usually pay more.

The following are mistakes commonly made:

Failing to Shop Around

How many people buy the first smartphone or car they come across? It is shocking that many are willing to take time shopping for other things, but not when it comes to their mortgages. A recent study reveals that about 50% of homebuyers never bother to shop around. According to City Creek Mortgage, consider visiting different lenders because even the smallest rate difference can result in savings.

Overlooking Credit

Did you know that you could get one free copy of your credit from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion annually? Did you also know that the FICO score is accessible from the Barclaycard and several other credit cards? Despite all these sources of credit information, many homebuyers fail to check their credit before starting looking for a mortgage.

Not Understanding Mortgage Terms

With mortgages, signing for something you do not understand is very possible. It happened during the Great Recession. If the adjustable mortgage rate is very attractive today, does it mean it will still work for you three years down the line? To avoid the effects of an unpredictable mortgage market, make sure you have understood the rates and other technicalities before signing the documents given by the mortgage company.

Ignoring the Importance of Preapproval

How many times have you liked something so much only to realize that you cannot get it? The disappointment and heartbreak can be enormous. That is why preapproval is an important part of getting a mortgage. Remember it makes sense to go with what the bank thinks you can pay.

Mortgage buyers, especially first timers, are likely to make the mistakes listed here. Many lenders may be ready to work with you without employment or assets, but they will still insisting on seeing your credit and housing history. To get a desirable mortgage, you may want to avoid these and other mistakes made by many homebuyers.

The Magic of Retainers

Different Kinds of RetainersDo you remember that sweet sensation of having your braces removed and you feel that your teeth are finally free of metal brackets? Do you remember the feeling of seeing your perfectly straight teeth for the first time?

Well, say hello to ortho retainers, the tool that will help you keep this permanent.

What is a Retainer?

Retainers hold your teeth in place once you are done with your braces. They prevent the teeth from moving out of place due to the absence of force that you used to get from braces. Your dentist takes an impression of your newly aligned teeth to mold your retainers and provide the right fit for your teeth.

What are the Different Kinds of Retainers?

There are three different kinds of retainers, specifically the Hawley Retainers, Essix Retainers, and the Permanent Retainers.

  • The Hawley Retainer is made from wire and plastic or acrylic. The wire is placed across the teeth and the plastic or acrylic is molded to fit inside your mouth. This kind of retainer is adjustable; however, it is quite noticeable.
  • The Essix Retainer is made from clear plastic. This retainer doesn’t allow your top and bottom teeth to close in naturally. This kind is not easily noticeable when you wear it, as the retainer is made of clear material.
  • The Permanent Bonded Retainer is an orthodontic device that you need to wear all the time. This retainer is glued to the back of your teeth, so people can’t see it. The only downside of wearing this type of retainer is discomfort.
How Do You Take Care of Your Retainers?

Just like braces, retainers need to be cleaned regularly to avoid irritating your teeth and gums. Don’t forget to place your ortho retainers in case that your dentist will provide to avoid bacteria build-up.

Retainers are essential in maintaining the effect of the braces and keep the alignment of your teeth. Consult your dentist to learn more about this treatment.

Keep an Eye on the Shocks: Safety, Lifespan & Signs of Wear

Shock AbsorberFor anyone who owns a car, keeping it in perfect running condition is perhaps the biggest challenge. And because a car is composed of a combination of complex mechanical and electrical components, it takes one to have knowledge and familiarity of the different parts to perform appropriate repairs correctly.

But, while it can be easy to identify worn out parts that are visible to the eye, this is not the case when a damaged part is hidden. One example is the shock, says Taysom Tire, Muffler & Auto Repair.

Signs of a Damaged Shock Absorber

Unlike tires which you can easily check for damages, the shocks are hidden under the wheel arches. Unless you disassemble the parts that cover it, you will just have to rely on some signs to know if it’s time for a replacement. The following are the common signs of a heavily damaged shock absorber.

  • Car rattling or rocking when running over uneven surfaces
  • Front end of the vehicle dives when you step on the brakes
  • Car easily slides sideways on mild winds or when driving on winding roads
  • Car tires wear out more quickly
Shock Absorber and Safety

Properly functioning shocks make for safer road trips. Like brakes and tires which play significant roles in terms of safety, shocks, too, can compromise safety if you disregard maintenance.

Damaged shocks do not just make tires wear out faster, but also, other suspension parts. It can also compromise braking efficiency, functioning of the ESP (Electronic Stability Control), and make driving control unstable. With the driver having to work double time, the increase in tiredness can make it unsafe when traveling especially during long trips.

Shock Replacement

Shock absorbers should be replaced once they reach 50,000 miles. But, experts also say that replacement may be sooner if maintenance is often ignored.

Because shock mountings are hidden and difficult to reach even if you support the chassis with safety stands, it is best that an auto mechanic performs the replacement.

Shock absorbers are as important as your car’s tires and brakes. If they are damaged, the tires and suspension parts will wear out faster. Damaged shock absorbers can also make driving more difficult and unsafe.
